World Assembly of Jesuit Universities in Spain
The World Assembly of Jesuit Universities was hosted by the University of Deusto from 8th to 12th July in Bilbao, Spain. The event was attended by more than two hundred Jesuits and Lay Collaborators from Jesuit Universities and Institutions of Higher Education from around the world.
The Indian delegation was one of the biggest with about 50 Jesuits. From Calcutta Province Fr Dominic Savio SJ, Rector and Principal of St Xavier’s College, Calcutta and Fr Paul Arockiam SJ, Principal of St Xavier’s College, Burdwan participated.
Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations, 2nd October, 2018
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, 2nd October, 2018 ,the Department of Education , on behalf of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata, organized a soul stirring and reflective programme on the philosophy and works of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme was presided over by our Respected Principal , Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio , S.J . and our Vice Principal (Education ) Prof. Dr. Charlotte Simpson Veigas. Faculty and Students across First and Second Year, attended the programme in large numbers .The Seminar Hall was filled to capacity and was witness to the special place occupied by ‘Bapuji’ in the hearts of each and every person present on this momentous occasion. The Welcome Address was given by our Principal, and this was followed by the Inaugural Address by our Vice Principal. The programme consisted of songs, tableau and thought provoking powerpoint presentations and videos on the life and work of the great Mahatma. A student crafted ,thermocol model of VIDYADEEPAM , the Village and social outreach programme of the Department of Education, which focuses on providing education to the marginalized sections of our society, was unveiled and Inaugurated by Respected Fr. Principal. Special thanks and grateful acknowledgement to the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development ) and NCTE (National Council of Teacher Education) for giving us a suitable platform and motivating us to showcase the work and deeds of Mahatma Gandhi, the ‘Father of the Nation’. Heartfelt thanks to our Respected Fr. Principal, Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio S.J, for his inspiration, continuous encouragement and for being the leader of our flock at St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata.
The iconic motto of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata ‘Nihil Ultra’ inspires every endeavour undertaken by the students and the NCC Department wishes to expand the horizons by organising Weapon Display in collaboration with the Head Quarters Eastern Command of Indian Army. This event take place for the first time in the history of St. Xavier’s.
The Armed forces work throughout the year during war, peace, disaster, and emergency situations. However, we as individuals fail to acknowledge their duties and selfless service to the nation. Therefore, it is an attempt on our part to provide an opportunity to the students of this institution and other institutions to gain an insight into the functioning of the armed forces and express their appreciation and respect.
The weapon display show held on 19th and 20th of March, 2018 from 10am to 5pm at the college ground. The inauguration of this event held on 19.03.2018 (Monday) and were graced by Brigadier Alok Beri, BGSIW Eastern command and Rev. Fr. Dominic Savio S.J. The 12th battalion of Bihar Regiment organised the display.
For underprivileged children at St. Xavier’s College
To spread happiness and joy among the underprivileged children, the annual flagship event of NSS- Shishu Mela, was organized on Sunday, 11th February 2018. The inaugural programme was graced with the august presence of Bishop Linus Gomes and the Chief Guest was Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata. The Guests of Honour were the Vice Principals – Prof. Bertram Da Silva, Rev. Dr. S. Xavier, SJ, Rev. Fr. Johnson Padiyara, SJ, Rev. Fr. Peter Arochiam, SJ, and Dr. Charlotte Simpson Veigas. The programme commenced with a vibrant performance by the students of XADAM, followed by felicitation of the dignitaries with flower bouquets. On this occasion ‘KADAM’, the departmental magazine, was released by Prof. Bertram Da Silva. The Chief Guest addressed the children and expressed his desire to see them in St. Xavier’s College as students in years to come. This gave the children a great hope to dream big. Ma’am Cheryl Francis, NSS Director, thanked everyone present for their support and cooperation. She also thanked Rev. Dr. J. Felix Raj, SJ. Vice Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, for his immense contribution to reach education to the rural students. The event was declared open with the release of colourful balloons.
This year around 950 children from 7 villages and 12 NGOs participated in the event. Children participated from Balrampur, Bholakhali, Debipur, Hogulkuria, Nurshikdarchowk, Paikhala and Shalpukur villages of South 24 Parganas. Children also participated from NGOs like Asha Niketan, Baikunthapur Sishu Seva Kendra, Bodhana, Calcutta Blind School, Don Bosco Ashalayam, Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy, Loreto Rainbow Homes, Navjeevan, Oral School for the Deaf Children, St. Xavier’s Evening School and Snegam.
Around 300 students from 18 departments of the College had put up games stalls. In addition, the Art Corner by BMM students and the Sports Centre by XADAM students, catered to the children. The special children from 5 NGOs enjoyed mostly in the art corner and in the touch and feel game stalls. After lunch break, youngsters portrayed their talents in the cultural programme. Some of them danced to various Bengali folk songs, and a short magic show put up by the special children from Asha Niketan, became the performance of the day. After the cultural programme children left the campus with their goody bags while munching on the snacks they received. The event came to a close with the prize for the best decorated stall bagged by the Multimedia & Animation department who also helped in the overall decoration of the campus.
